It is often easy to overlook the role that the producer plays in the making of a hit record, after all, they are mostly behind the scenes and perhaps not celebrated as much as they really deserve.
2018 has surely been filled with good music, hit anthems and banging dance records prominently ignited by great productions.
Hardly do we give credits to music producers for all the work they do behind the scenes but in a year where pleasing music trumps every other element in creating music and becoming hit anthems, the producer’s role is ever so crucial, and a few have successfully stood out from the pack all year long.
The works of these producers have served as the foundation for some of the biggest and most impactful songs this year, hence making them worthy of getting recognition.
Here is the list of the Top Ten Nigerian producers whose works lit 2018 the best.
This very talented music maker has earned his spotlight in a very short time. He has been working with artistes like Lil Kesh, Chinko Ekun and Zlatan etc. He is best known for producing ‘Able God’ which has been a big rave on the streets. He also produced singles like ‘Zanku’, ‘Flenjo’, ‘Gbewa’ and so oon.
The YBNL affiliated beat-maker is one who had a fairly quiet year compared to what he has achieved in past years.
2018 has seen Pheelz take a more experimental route as he seeks to redefine his sound, but with the few works he blessed, it is clear he hasn’t missed a beat and he closes the year strongly by contributing to some notable cuts that made the mainstream.
However, the music maker is responsible for most of the tracks on the ‘YBNL Mafia Family’ album. He also hold production credit for Mr Eazi’s smash hit ‘Surrender’ and a number of songs on Adekunle Gold’s ‘’About 30’’ album like ‘Ire’ and ‘Money’ .
8. Kel P
At number 8 spot is Peter Kelvin better known as Kel P. The music producer has quite frankly been on the block for a while and has worked with several Nigerian artistes. However, his major break came through working with Nigeria’s finest Burna Boy. He is responsible for making Burna Boy’s latest hit singles which are ‘Gbona’ and ‘On The Low’. Within weeks of release these songs have actually turned sing-along tunes.
Phantom’s notable works this year may be few but they are quite heavy.
The soft spoken beatmaker comes loud based on his contribution to unarguably the biggest record of the year in Burna Boy‘s ‘Ye’ and also working on Wizkid‘s ‘Master Groove’.
It was a not the typical hectic year for the iconic producer who has long cemented his place as one of the best in the land.
However, he was still able to deliver some chart-topping joints with ‘Energy’ by Skepta and Wizkid, DJ Enimoney‘s ‘Diet’, the street anthem ‘Lakukulala’ by Oladips and Niniola‘s ‘Bana’, including working on his individual project that saw the release of the viral song ‘Balenciaga.’
Benjamin Obaze, also known as Spellz is another one that stood out yet again this year and is being regarded for his consistency and evolution.
The previous years has seen him deliver anthems like ‘Iskaba’ and ‘Malo’ but in 2018, Spellz is responsible for a number of popular records like Tiwa Savage‘s ‘Lova Lova’ and ‘Tiwa’s Vibe’, ‘Askamaya’ by Teni and Mu4ty‘s ‘Commando’ ft Wizkid and Ceeza.
There is no question that Northboi is one of the breakout producers for 2018. His catalog may not be as extensive as others, but when your name is attached to two of the biggest songs released in the year, then you have done enough to deserve worthy recognition.
From being unknown to becoming the producer of the adjudged number one song in the country ‘Soco’. NorthBoi may not have a long list of songs with production credits to him but the few he has worked on are top notch. He is credited for producing Mayorkun’s smash hit ‘Posh’ and Wizkid & Slimcase ‘Gucci Snake’ and also co-produced Wizkid‘s ‘Fever’. He copped ‘New Discovery Producer’ of the year at Beatz Awards with several other nominations.
The growth of this new school beat-maker has been astronomical. SperoachBeatz moved into DMW with his guy Peruzzi and since then the man has already written his name in the industry as a top beat-maker.
His upbeat efforts have propelled his name to instant recognition blessing a number ofDMW affiliated records like Davido’s ‘Assurance’, Dremo’s ‘Kpa’ and also co-producing ‘Nwa Baby’, but perhaps his most acclaimed contribution to the year will be 2face’s ‘Amaka’ featuring Peruzzi which earned him massive credit, with over distinct strings and keys, we can agree that he fully earned his stripes as one to watch out for.
2. Fresh VDM

With his signature tag of ‘shabalistical’, the young producer owned 2018 and cemented his place in the history books. He has proven his worth working with different artistes in the industry and his beats bang
